New Tourist Boat “MV Irungu” Launched on Kazinga Channel
A new double-decker motorized vessel, MV Irungu, was launched on the famous Kazinga Channel in Uganda’s Queen Elizabeth National Park, expanding opportunities for wildlife viewing in one of East Africa’s premier safari destinations.

The state-of-the-art boat, designed specifically for wildlife viewing, can accommodate up to 50 tourists across its two decks, significantly increasing capacity for visitors eager to experience the channel’s renowned biodiversity.
“MV Irungu represents our commitment to enhancing tourism experiences while maintaining our dedication to conservation,” said the Uganda Wildlife Authority spokesperson at the launch ceremony. “The boat’s eco-friendly design minimizes environmental impact while maximizing wildlife viewing opportunities.”
The double-decker design provides tourists with varied viewing perspectives – the lower deck offers intimate, close-to-water wildlife observation, while the upper deck delivers panoramic views across the channel landscape, ideal for photography enthusiasts.

The Kazinga Channel is renowned for hosting one of the world’s largest concentrations of hippos, as well as numerous crocodiles, elephants, buffalo, and over 100 bird species that can be observed from the water. MV Irungu’s spacious decks provide optimal sightlines for wildlife observation from multiple angles.
Tourism officials expect MV Irungu to help accommodate growing visitor numbers to Queen Elizabeth National Park, which has seen increasing interest from international tourists seeking authentic African safari experiences.
The boat cruises, typically lasting two hours, have become one of the park’s signature attractions, offering visitors a unique perspective of Uganda’s wildlife in their natural habitat.
Local tour operators have welcomed MV Irungu, noting that its 50-passenger capacity will help reduce waiting times during peak season and create additional employment opportunities for guides and boat staff from surrounding communities.
